The one thing we knew was that Marin Cilic had to be fully fit to make a real match of this yesterday! He wasn’t, the blisters suffered from the Sam Querrey semi-final reducing the Croat to tears midway through the second set. It’s unfortunate for him as it’s simply something you can do very little about. It made for a relatively routine win for Federer as a result. The first set was settled by the one break of serve and then it became apparent Cilic was in discomfort! He took a medical time out at the end of the second and had another go in the third. Federer held strong though with a single break again being enough, thus landing him his 8th title at SW19!
Federer has looked on a different level these Championships, he went the fortnight without dropping a set. I said in my preview that he looked the clear favourite for the title and so it proved! Injury and Gilles Muller combined, ensured he didn’t have to face any of his big rivals. This alone tells you he would surely have beaten whoever!
Jamie Murray/Martina Hingis won the mixed doubles final against Henri Kontinen/Heather Watson. The crowd having mixed loyalties on Centre for this one! The BBC absolutely ‘buzzin’ about the fact Hingis sent Jamie the text about teaming up! A very well organised partnership that hit the ground running, as you would probably expect as top seeds but it doesn’t always work like that. I witnessed Murray’s first mixed doubles title with Jelena Jankovic….10 years ago! REALLY??? Time really does start to fly in your 30’s! A very positive period for Watson too, she will be looking to kick-on during the US Swing. It has been much better from her over the grass court swing, good performances at Surbiton, Eastbourne and now Wimbledon!
The boy’s junior title was won by the superbly named Alejandro Davidovich Fokina from Spain, the 8th seed beat unseeded Axel Geller from Argentina. The Spaniard, like Federer, did so without dropping a set during the tournament. Alejandro is apparently the first Spaniard to win this title in 50 years!
