The lad Schwartzman has claimed a huge scalp in beating fifth seed and former champ Marin Cilic in four sets, to reach the fourth round of a grand slam for the first time! I am absolutely buzzin about it! It really is one of those David v Goliath stories, at 5 ft 7 he is losing almost a foot to the Croat! I just love watching him go it, so much zip on his shots! The delight was clear as he fell to the ground after clinching the final point! The Argentine will now face Lucas Pouille in the last 16, in a match I would be all over if I was still in New York tomorrow! Pouille took out Mikhail Kukushkin in four! The bottom half of the draw really is wide open and it will yield a first time grand slam finalist no matter what now! Pablo Carreno Busta is the highest seed remaining in this section at number 12, he is still yet to drop a set after beating Nicolas Mahut! Denis Shapovavlov advanced to the fourth round after Kyle Edmund withdrew at two sets to one down with a back problem! Kevin Anderson will face Paolo Lorenzi, Anderson taking out Borna Coric impressively in straights! Lorenzi is also having a dream run, having beat Thomas Fabbiano in an all Italian third round! John Isner is out though having lost to Mischa Zverev in straights, the American had treatment on his neck and will feel this is a big opportunity lost! He says he struggles with night session matches and I quote “it sucks”! For the older Zverev brother, Mischa, it represents another opportunity to reach a grand slam quarter-final having made the last 8 down under earlier in the year! Sam Querrey stands in his way! Querrey continues his good form having dropped the first set against Radu Albot before seeing the Moldovan off in 4!
In the Women’s event, Garbine Muguruza continued her good form! She beat Maggie Rybarikova by an identical scoreline to their semi-final at Wimbledon, 6/1 6/1. In this kind of form she will take some beating and she is rightly the bookies favourite for the tournament! She has a mouth watering tie against Petra Kvitova in the last 16 after the Czech hammered Caroline Garcia, both players yet to drop a set yet! Venus Williams, looking to make her he third slam final of the year disposed of Maria Sakkari, she will now face Carla Suarez Navarro. The Spaniard surprised me in taking out Ekaterina Makarova! Having seen the form Makarova was in against Wozniacki I expected her to set up a last 16 encounter against Venus! Sloane Stephens matched her best effort at the Open, she made light work of Ash Barty 6/2 6/4! She will fancy making the last 8 against Julia Goerges. She actually has a great chance of making at least the semi’s here IMO! Maria Sharapova failed to impress against Sofia Kenin. I think the Russian clocked up around 30 unforced errors in the first set yesterday! She will play Anastasija Sevastova in the last 16! This will be a tough match up with the variety the Latvian brings to the table and I actually have a feeling that Sharapova might go here! Sevastova seems to like the conditions in New York, having made the quarter’s here last year!
