To say the least, I have a vivid imagination, so when combining tennis and music it is a potential recipe for disaster with how my mind works. At pretty much any opportunity I am liable to bust out some tunes, so as you would expect this is a topic that could have infinite sequels! All very light-hearted obviously, with no offence meant to player or artist! Any tune I put on a blog like this shows my love of it! There is also the side that shows you a useful insight into my weird and wonderful brain! So on that note, here we go. Uno, dos, tres, quatro!
Theme from S’Express – S’Express (Roger Federer)
A tune I have had in my head for many, many years now! Firstly, it is not difficult to just change the lyrics of ‘S’Express’ to ‘Fed-Express’, in fact, it goes pretty well! A UK number one back in 1988, this saw house music in its early phases! The intro starts off with ‘enjoy this trip…..and it is a trip’ and this has been some trip for the 19 time Grand Slam Champion! The chorus adds ‘I’ve got the hots for you’ which is absolutely perfect for his adoring fan base worldwide! How about instead of chanting ‘Let’s go Roger let’s go’ bellowing out a bit of ‘Fed-Express’?
Roll It Gal – Alison Hinds (Serena Williams)
Released in Barbados in 2005, this absolute tune from the Bajan Soca Queen, Alison Hinds is all about female empowerment and independence! Not so well known sadly in the UK, but it should be. There are lyrics relating to pride, looking after your kids and both standing up for and believing in yourself! I think you could just run a reel of clips from SW’s successes with this as the music! The 23 time Slam champion is a pioneer in many different areas, both on and off the court and her fight for justice typifies this barnstormer of a tune! Roll It Gal!
I Can – Nas (Nick Kyrgios)
I know I can (I know I can!)
Be what I wanna be (be what I wanna be!)
If I work hard at it (If I work hard it!)
I’ll be where I wanna be.
This hip-hop tune from back in 2003 warns of the perils in life and obstacles that people have faced. It also tackles some very serious issues that are present in the world, especially for African Americans! Great tune! The chorus though are words that Nick can relate to himself. For the straight-talking Ozzy, these lyrics fit right in! If Kyrgios settles down to life on the tennis circuit then we all know anything is possible! As he has said himself, it’s all down to his dedication and commitment.
