I like many will miss Caro. It is fair to say over the years that she has been a popular champion in the sport. She is someone that as a tennis fan I have always admired and aside from the fact that she would spank me at tennis, I feel I share a few ‘similarities’ with her. Here are some of the reasons for the adoration and support over the years.
Caro is a Kopite.
The very fact that Wozniacki is a BIG Liverpool fan has always been a huge bonus. She loves the Redmen as we have seen on social media many times in the past and on-court where she has donned an LFC shirt in the prematch warmups. She was absolutely buzzin’ about Stevie G sending her a message on retirement, in what was a lovely touch from the Anfield Legend. Allez, Allez, Allez!!!!
Good pals with Rena.
She is close friends with my idol, Serena Williams. The pair have each other back and have a genuine friendship with Serena even being a bridesmaid at Caro’s wedding. Such close proximity with the GOAT is always going to be a winning formula in my eyes. The pair played doubles in Auckland this year where Wozniacki said they should have done this earlier. Some team that mind!
She has RA.
Rheumatoid arthritis is something that I suffer from and have found that it has caused me plenty of aggravation in the past. There are times when I struggle to open a bottle, let alone pick up a tennis racket and stick it out for three and a half hours. It can be very sore, swollen and painful to say the least. I personally think it is remarkable she was taking to a tennis court with this disorder. If you don’t agree you should read up on it and you will probably eat your words. I have a great deal of admiration for her for playing through this and looking to spread worldwide awareness on the subject into her retirement.
Winning The Aussie Open.
I actually tipped her up in my blog for the Aussie Open in 2018, where she duly obliged by winning her one and only Grand Slam (2018 Australian Open Preview! ). She beat Simona Halep in the final and it was a win that nobody would begrudge. Let us not forget that Caro was a former world number one though with 30 WTA titles to her name. This was no flash in the pan and was a fully deserved victory in Melbourne.
Hard work and graft.
It is well known that Wozniacki was one of the hardest working players on tour and that was reflected in her matches on-court. It was this that helped her reach her main goal of a grand slam title. After losing her final match on tour to Ons Jabeur she was quoted as saying, “I think it was only fitting that my last match would be a three-setter, a grinder and that I would finish my career with a forehand error! I think those are the things that I’ve been working on my whole career, and I guess this was just meant to be… It’s been a great ride”. It certainly has been Caro.
Wozniacki achieved all that she set out to do in the game and can now look forward to starting up a family with her husband David. Class. Good on her and we wish her all the best in her next steps. Just remember Caro ‘Up The reds’ and YNWA.
